Players will again have to remember the story of Vito Scaletta. The young man, hardened in the battles of the Second World War, moves with his parents to Empire Bay, where he tries to start a new life. Faced with the hard life of the post-war emigrants, the Scaletto family finds itself head over heels in debt. Realizing that big money only runs in the underground business, Vito decides to take the path of organized crime. In this he is helped by an old friend Joe, who has already learned the intricacies of the underworld.

New features

Of course, a game made 10 years ago, and now claimed to be remastered, has little to offer older players other than significantly improved graphics. A small but nice bonus for all fans of the old game was the fact that the Definitive edition can be obtained for free, if you have the original Mafia 2.

Major changes:

• Redesigned graphics. Improved graphics make the character models almost cinematic, allowing players to experience cutscenes, well-designed figures and locations.
• High resolution support. Empire Bay now looks more lively, with many more cars and people on the streets. In the original game, there were fewer models, and this unfinished detail of the game somewhat spoiled the overall picture and threw down the mood.
• Positive changes, both graphical and mechanical, allow players to enjoy truly colorful battles. Mafia 2 is known for its intense action scenes, gunfights and intense plot moments. Now, when players go through them again, what is happening will feel more acute and more vividly remembered.

Game Features

We can say that the same Mafia 2 appears before gamers, but only better in quality. In addition to the main story missions, Empire Bay is available to players in all its splendor. As it should be according to the rules of the open world, gamers will have different assignments and additional tasks. And although the city is not so rich in such tasks, compared to GTA, the developers did not set such a goal. They put much more value into the set - the atmosphere. Panoramic views, buildings, fashion, cars - all of this breathes with the flavor of the 40s, so successfully romanticized due to gangster films. It is thanks to these details that Mafia 2 Definitive Edition can be considered one of the rare games where the gamer, together with the hero, goes the hard way. In this case, being in a criminal family. As befits a good gangster drama, the main character Vito will have both ups and downs, events full of joy and disappointment.

Live classics

The Definitive edition will not only delight former supporters, but will also be a great revelation for those who missed the opportunity or were unable to get acquainted with the first game. In addition to the reworked graphics, the novelty, which takes place in the 60s, includes all the DLC. And also a small content easter egg - clothes and cars of the main character of Mafia 3. Thanks to the presence of all the DLC, the story gives players a more complete story, with the disclosure of many details that remained unanswered in the original game.

However, no matter how long they worked on the remasted, there were still problematic moments in the reissue of the famous game. One of the significant drawbacks is the old plot. It has not undergone any special changes, which means that those who have already played the game will find little new for themselves from the mechanics or in the plot twists. Not without problems with physics, which somewhat spoils the overall impression. Some cutscenes simply do not run, requiring a restart, which is disappointing.

Is it worth playing?

The Mafia series has earned the love of fans for a very long time, but now it remains the best for many gamers. Fans greeted the release of Mafia 2 Definitive Edition with joy, because this novelty is a modernization of an old masterpiece, which is deservedly considered a classic in its genre. And although in some aspects the Definitive edition loses a little, because the old problems have not gone anywhere, it is still interesting to play it. We can only hope that Hangar 13 and D3T Limited, responsible for this product, will also do a good job of re-releasing the beloved first installment of Mafia - The City of Lost Heaven, which is rightfully called the best of the whole series.
