Resident Evil HD Remaster
The Resident Evil series has had an incredible impact on modern culture. She, in fact, created a new genre - zombie survival - and spawned a craze for the living dead. These characters began to appear in computer games, films, TV series and comics like mushrooms after rain.
And the beginning of the Resident Evil series was laid back in 1996, when the Japanese studio Capcom released the first of the series. Of course, it is not possible to run it on modern computers (and if it does, the graphics and controls will turn out to be such that it would be better if it didn’t start). Therefore, today's gamers who want to know how the zombie mania began are offered a remaster of the original game, which is called the Resident Evil HD Remaster.
You shouldn't enter mansions without an invitation
Let's agree right away - the original Resident Evil was released in 1996. Since then, the series has been replenished with a dozen more games, a couple of films, a bunch of comics and side projects. Therefore, the mention of the Umbrella corporation will not be a spoiler. Everyone already knows who exactly is behind the appearance of aggressive zombies.
But the original RE players didn't know. According to the good tradition of Japanese horror movies, they were kept in the dark until the middle of the plot. I had to independently look for some scraps of information and try to build a picture of what was happening. And the unknown is more frightening than some already banal zombies.
The plot of Resident Evil begins with an incomprehensible nonsense happening in the city of Rakuun City. Locals are killed one by one at the hands of monstrous killers. Police reports indicate that villains usually attack in large groups - about 10 people each. Almost nothing is left of the victims.
A special squad S.T.A.R.S., consisting of two groups - "Alpha" and "Bravo", arrives to fight an unknown evil. The second quickly disappears in an unknown direction. Therefore, "Alpha" remains in splendid isolation and goes to investigate the place of the disappearance of his colleagues. There, the characters first encounter mutated dog-like creatures gnawing at one of the commandos, and then find a mysterious mansion.
As it turns out, this residence - and in this case, the witty name of the game Resident Evil becomes clear - is fraught with even more dangers than the world around it. Here in every room there are zombies, mutants, Cerberus dogs, giant spiders and some kind of lizard-like creatures. The mansion is large, part of the premises is locked, so the special forces have to solve puzzles as well.
Walking around the mansion, they find out that this residence is just a passage to the catacombs of the Umbrella corporation ...
Resident Evil HD Remaster Gameplay
The Resident Evil series was originally represented by classic survival horror games, and only then "slid" into "meat shooters". So the first game is notable for its leisurely gameplay, in which you must rather try to survive in an atmosphere of horror than actively shoot all sorts of monsters.
Opponents in Resident Evil are much stronger and more dangerous than the gallant American special forces. Fortunately, they are not too numerous. As a rule, the principle is "one room - one monster", so you can more or less prepare for a meeting with a mutant or a zombie. But the weapons will still be sorely lacking.
Most of the gameplay is also about solving puzzles. The mansion's rooms are locked and need to be opened somehow. For example, to enter the crypt, you will need to find an arrowhead, and another key can be found in a bathtub filled with water. To open another door, you need to set the correct time on the clock - and so on.
Differences between Resident Evil HD Remaster and the original game
The remaster brought not only new graphics, but also a couple of other additions. The key differences between the game and the original are:
- Several additional endings have been added, which differ depending on the actions of the characters, the points they have accumulated and the damage received;
- Additional locations have appeared that were cut from the original RE at the time of development. This is a graveyard, a path through the forest and several others;
- Some of the puzzles have been replaced with new ones. Therefore, even players who have completed the original RE up and down can think about the tasks in this game;
- Original footage recorded specifically for this game has been replaced with cut-scenes using the game engine;
- Additional Easter eggs and secrets to motivate you to replay.
Also, for the sake of modern technologies, several additional levels of difficulty and game modes have been added. And the storylines capture not only the history of Resident Evil itself, but also the events that happened before the arrival of the S.T.A.R.S. squad. in Racuun City.
