Retro
There are two main reasons we love retro games. Firstly, we went through them during our carefree childhood. All these "Mario", "Sonic" and other "Chip and Dale" remind of that wonderful age when you could "stick" to the console all night long without worrying that due to lack of sleep you will not be able to normal tomorrow work and therefore run the risk of getting scolded by the management (with entry into the payroll).
Secondly, they were originally developed for the most simple and straightforward gameplay. Neither an open world, nor a non-linear storyline, nor a multi-faceted gameplay with a constant switching of styles was required. You just run from the left side of the level to the right and jump on various enemies.
And now, when we unexpectedly feel nostalgia and want to "stick" in some Rock'n'Roll Racing - we dream of returning not to the difficult race tracks of distant planets, but to carefree times. And, unfortunately, trying to run retro games on a modern computer is a real illustration of adulthood. Because first you need to find a suitable emulator, configure it, test it on a PC, and only then you can launch Super Mario Bros. and set off on a journey through the Mushroom Kingdom, while realizing that it is still a pleasure to control an Italian plumber from the keyboard.
But there is an easier way to set sail on the waves of nostalgia - open the Retro section on Twitch.
"Retro" is a loose concept
The Retro section on Twitch contains streams of retro games. But the very concept of "retro" is extremely elastic. Here you can find broadcasts and arkanoid from the 1970s like the same Space Invaders, and games from arcade machines from the 1980s, and the first projects for home computers from the 1990s.
Russian gamers sometimes stream even the first games from the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series to the Retro section! And they began to appear in 2007, that is, relatively recently. But - yes, of course, next to modern games with all their latest generation shaders, ray tracing, open world, non-linear storyline and other augmented reality technologies, they look old school.
So, when you open the Retro section, you will never guess what exactly you will be able to find there.
Most Popular Retro Games on Twitch
However, some retro games stream more often than others. It just so happened that the childhood of most of the Twitch audience was in the late 1990s and early 2000s. And in these times, two gaming platforms were especially popular - Sega Mega Drive and Nintendo Entertainment System, which "in our latitudes" was better known for its hardware clone Dendy.
Accordingly, the most popular games in these sections are projects for Sega and Dandy:
- Rock n 'Roll Racing. An arcade racing game developed by Blizzard. In it, it was possible to shoot rivals and make them mean to others. Blizzard has squeezed the most out of the sound chip of the console and included iconic compositions in every possible subgenre of rock into the soundtrack of the game! Particularly memorable is Bad to the Bone with its incredibly epic intro;
- Dune II. Full-fledged strategies also came to Sega. Dune II was a classic real-time strategy game in which the player controlled one of the three factions described in Frank Herbert's cult novel - Atreides, Harkonnen or Ordos. And the damned shai-huluds were constantly eating harvesters!
- Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. A full-fledged fighting game with thoughtful gameplay. Two dozen characters are fighting each other for the sake of ... but who is interested in the plot of "Mortal Kombat"?
- Sonic the Hedgehog. And a bunch of sequels. Bright, addicting and interesting platformer with unusual gameplay, accelerating Sonic and various levels;
- Contra. A whole series of shoot ‘em ups for Dandy. All had about the same plot - controlling elite special forces, landing in the jungle and dealing with numerous opponents, both humans and robots or even some fantasy creatures;
- Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers. One of the most famous Dandy platformers. You only need to play it together - otherwise half the fun will be lost. For example, when you grab a "partner" and start dragging him around, there is a case when the lucky owner of the second joystick grumbles in annoyance.
But these are, of course, the most popular ones. In the Retro section, you can also find less common ones.
Streams from platforms in the Retro section
Sometimes streamers choose not just one game, but the whole platform.
That is why in the Retro section you can find broadcasts from platforms - for example, Sega Genesis, NES, the first PlayStation, Sega Master System, Sega Game Gear, etc.
