Despite the slightly misleading name, surviv.io is not a survival. This is a classic "royal battle", performed in the best traditions of the genre. The mechanics of the game are the quintessence of a battle royale without additional improvements - and demonstrate that exciting gameplay does not require beautiful 3D graphics or any technological innovations.

surviv.io itself is a free two-dimensional browser game that uses modern technology and therefore can run even on mobile devices. There is no need to install a client for it.

Classic Battle Royale Mechanics

The idea of ​​"battle royale" as a genre came from Japan, and the writer Kosyun Takami is to thank for it. The plot of his novel, which is called "Royal Battle", tells the story of how high school children are forced to fight each other on a desert island until there is only one survivor. The book was published in 1999 and was somewhat provocative.

Although the very idea of ​​"pushing children together on the island" is not new. Back in 1954, the English writer William Golding published the allegorical novel Lord of the Flies. In it, a group of children also ended up on a desert island. They, however, did not need to fight among themselves - just at least survive. However, in the process of building a brave new society, they encountered renegades, dissidents, and other socially disadvantaged individuals. There are also scenes of the murder of one child by another.

The battle royale mechanics are also featured in the Hunger Games series of novels (and films). And there it is also quite classic. On a limited area of ​​land, children and adolescents collide with each other, and the task is simple - there should be only one left. In addition to the weapons of other participants in the "royal battle", players are also threatened by an aggressive environment filled with all sorts of monsters.

In general, even if you have never heard the term "battle royale", you can still have an idea of ​​its gameplay. Because this genre is incredibly popular. He seems to criticize senseless cruelty, but at the same time revels in it, which makes the style very interesting in computer games.

The surviv.io characters are small colorful circles on a gridded field. The area available for research is constantly decreasing, pushing the geometric characters closer to the center. If the character falls out of the field accessible for research and ends up in the red zone, then he begins to lose health very quickly and, as a rule, dies.

Initially, the characters are armed only with fists. Other weapons - from melee shotguns to sniper rifles for remote destruction of the enemy - can be found directly on the map. They are scattered across the field in boxes, houses, and other hiding places. In addition, on the map you can find katanas and grenades, body armor and helmets, as well as accessories for weapons like enlarged sights.

Objects on the field can be used as cover. However, not all of them are equally reliable - some are destroyed after just a few hits.

And all this, in general, rather advanced mechanics is combined with "painted in Paint" graphics from a strictly top view. Characters are mugs. Shelters are sketched geometric shapes. Weapons and ammunition boxes are brown squares. In short, surviv.io shows that you don't need Unreal Engine 4 or any other advanced engine for a good battle royale.

Multiplayer in surviv.io

As is typical of the battle royale genre, surviv.io is a purely multiplayer game. Up to 50 players can be present on the map at the same time. At the same time, in the standard mode, they fight against each other and do not have means of communication, so asking that circle over there not to rush into killing will not work.

In addition, surviv.io supports cooperative playthroughs. The surviving team can consist of two or four players. True, they will not have direct communications through the game, but Discord has not been canceled yet.

In the classic multiplayer mode, surviv.io receives regular updates to coincide with certain holidays. The map may contain bonus objects, additional weapons, as well as cosmetic innovations made in the style of the event. At the same time, the developers even have a sense of humor. For example, one of the most powerful melee weapons that deals maximum damage is the Frying Pan. It was added just during this "seasonal" update - and has remained for a long time.
