Quake Live
"Quake" has always been an exclusively single-player shooter, and incredibly nostalgic - a game from those times when the pixels on the screen were large, and a cat could sleep peacefully on the monitor, even if curled up into a ball, even though stretched out to the full length of the cathode ray tube .
But in 2007, id Software studio for some reason decided to pull modern gameplay onto Quake. She looked at the computer games market, saw the incredible popularity of Counter-Strike and the millions of memes about Team Fortress 2, and announced her own reworking of the "meat shooter" for tactical multiplayer mechanism.
The project was named Quake Live and was released in 2010. The game embodies everything "boomer", for which we love "Quake" so much: locations, weapons, gameplay. But still somehow it does not work out to associate multiplayer tactical gameplay and Quake.
Welcome to an even more Eternal Arena
In general, strictly speaking, Quake Live is not id Software's only multiplayer experiment. Back in 1999, this studio released a multiplayer shooter. It was called quite simply - Quake III Arena.
The game had a huge number of technical flaws. But this, in principle, is understandable and forgivable - the project was released in 1999, when the creators did not really understand how to approach the very concept of a multiplayer shooter. Just multiplayer, no tactics - there were no classes.
But there was some semblance of a plot (for some reason). The characters went to the so-called Eternal Arena, built by the mysterious race Vadrigar for gladiatorial battles. It was watching such battles that the aliens had fun as best they could. The player took turns going through several battles until he got to the last one, where Ziro, the champion of the Eternal Arena, was already waiting for him.
The game itself, despite the fact that it was released on almost all possible platforms, including Dreamcast, Symbian and Android, did not gain any enchanting popularity. But the developers took the technologies used in it and on their basis created the very Quake Live.
Quake Live Game Modes
A key feature of Quake Live is the huge number of game modes available. There are more than a dozen of them here! It would be too long to list everything, so let's choose the main ones:
- Duel. There are two players in the arena, the task of each is to kill the other. After death, characters are reborn. The match ends when the timer expires, the winner is the one with the most "frags";
- Free For All. Extended version of "Duel", almost flowing into "battle royale". Up to 12 players appear on the arena, each of them fighting for himself. The match ends when the timer expires, the winner is the one with the most frags;
- Team Deathmatch. Almost the same as Free For All, only the players present are split into two teams. Don't touch your own, kill your opponents. Likewise, the winner is the team with the most frags after the timer expires;
- Capture the Flag. Two commands, each with its own flag. The task is to capture the "banner" of the enemy and bring it to your base;
- Clan Arena. Two teams. The characters each have all the weapons available, except for the most powerful ones like the BFG. Heroes do not respawn after death. The task is to get rid of opponents;
- Freeze Tag. Two commands. After death, the character is frozen and remains in this state until the end of the round - or until a follower finds him and does not "activate". The task is to turn the entire opposing team into ice sculptures;
- Domination. Two commands. The characters each have all the weapons available, with the exception of the most deadly (like the BFG or the rocket launcher), and there are simply no items on the map. The task is to hold a certain number of your control points and at the same time capture all the enemy ones;
- 1-Flag CTF and Harvester. Two similar modes. In the first case, there is a flag in the center of the arena, in the second - a pile of skulls. You need to pick up this stuff and take it to the enemy base. In addition, in Harvester mode, the skulls in the center of the arena appear after each death of the character;
- Red Rover. One of the most interesting modes. After death, the character goes to the opposing team. The task is to gather all the players on the "one side".
There are also non-combat modes. For example, Race.
Custom Quake Live Servers
There are practically no official servers in Quake Live, almost all sites and maps are created and maintained by the users themselves.
This brings additional interest, as users often modify the game modes, available ammo, graphics, maps and other components. Therefore, each new match becomes a real challenge.
