Teamfight Tactics

Teamfight Tactics is an Auto Chess-style game from Riot Games. The project is completely free, multi-user, available on personal computers and smartphones. Powered by the League of Legends client since 2019, and launched on mobile in 2020.

Visual

Teamfight Tactics has a nice and intuitive picture. Most of the screen is occupied by the battlefield - beautifully stylized and detailed. There are a variety of battle board designs that differ in general colors, seasons, and a set of Easter eggs and references to the main Riot Games project.

The user-friendly and concise interface is also pleasing. Working menus are located "frame" around the battlefield. They do not take up much space, but they allow you to conveniently control the gameplay. The panels show all the important data on characters (including role and origin), victory points, opponents, and more.

Gameplay

Teamfight Tactics with its gameplay is not much different from other auto-chess. The player must place his characters on the field, equipping them and building a group so that later this will bring victory. Champions fight on their own, the player cannot help them in any way.

Each match consists of 8 islands and is designed for 8 players. During the first battle on the central island, a gathering is arranged: you need to run up to the characters running in circles and choose them to your team. After the time for gathering is over, each player will be transferred to their island.

The island is the playing field. It is small, only 3/5 hexagonal cells in size. This form was not chosen by chance: with its help, the developers limited the possibility of building in rows, which would significantly narrow the variability of the gameplay.

The player places his champions between the battlefield and the 9-seat bench. To get the most powerful army, you need to correctly combine heroes of different classes and clans.

There will be a preparation stage before each battle. During this time, you can sell and buy champions, interact with the store and line up your fighters on the battlefield in special tactics.

All battles are in 1/1 format. The computer randomly selects the field, which of the opponents will be used for the battle. The battle will go on until one of the players gets an unconditional victory.

Champions and their features

In Teamfight Tactics, champions occupy an important place, and they fight for their "little legend" (and this is what the project calls the player). There are only 50 champions in auto-chess from Ryot at the beginning of 2020, but their number is constantly growing.

Each hero has its own role and origin. They directly affect what combinations can be obtained with this champion. For example, if you collect several heroes with the same key characteristic in a team, the whole squad will receive a boost. This is just one example of combinations, the simplest, in practice there are many more.

Also, characters have their own special skills. There are 5 of them in total, and this is also important for creating the right combinations on the battlefield. In addition, champions differ in terms of health, mana, and damage dealt.

Chips and highlights

Teamfight Tactics has many strengths in terms of visuals and gameplay. In addition, the project is filled with interesting features:

  • Items play an important role in the game. They are ported from League of Legends and related to the general lore of the world. Each item has its own level of rarity, indicators, features. And then there are things that are not signed in any way. The game simply indicates that the thing is "doing something" and the player has to deal with it on their own.
  • The player is called a "little legend" and is given a special avatar with a pet. He can dance, react emotionally to what is happening and just entertain the player. This is a purely cosmetic nuance, but it adds a special emotion.
  • Ryot's Auto-Chess is primarily a competition. It has its own rank system. Players gather for battles depending on the level already obtained. An increase or decrease in rank occurs after each battle.
  • Champions can be upgraded in a variety of ways. The most affordable one is to get three copies of one hero from the play store and combine them into one super-character. This version with two stars will be a little stronger and more resilient.
  • It is quite easy even for a beginner to understand how the game works. It will take no more than one full battle to figure out all the rules - about 30-40 minutes.

If you like projects like Auto Chess, Teamfight Tactics definitely deserves your attention. The game is easy to understand, interesting and addicting. It will definitely be the right place to while away a boring evening, enjoying unobtrusive gameplay and original visuals.
