Unturned

Unturned is a free multiplayer zombie apocalypse survival game. The project introduces an open world with the possibility of its free exploration. This indie game was developed by independent programmer Nelson Sexton. The project has been ported to PCs of any operating systems, including Linux.

Visual

Graphically, Unturned is very similar to the infamous Minecraft. The world is cubic and polygonal, the textures are simple. The colors are bright, contrasting, but not acidic. However, such a graphic solution cannot be called a special style or an unusual solution. It is dictated by extremely small budgets and a tight development team.

The game assumes that survival takes place in the vastness of Canada, but this did not greatly affect the visual component. Game sounds are standard, the project also does not have a special soundtrack. The game island is small, there are only 16 zones available for collecting loot.

Gameplay

Unturned is a classic survival game with all its pros and cons. The main risk factor is zombies, with which the player will have to fight throughout the game. And the character will also be opposed by other users who, like him, are fighting for resources and a place in the sun (if multiplayer mode is enabled).

You can play alone or with friends. In the free version of survival, resources at the start are either completely absent, or there is only a critically necessary minimum. After purchasing the Gold Pass, you can start the game in Gold mode with the corresponding benefits.

The resources necessary for survival can be collected, searched in abandoned buildings and taken from other players by force. In addition to directly grinding and fighting zombies, the player will have to build defensive structures, engage in hunting and fishing, learn to drive vehicles, try himself as a farmer and much more.

Also in Unturned there are NPCs that issue quests. For them you can get useful items and experience. Experience is required to level up the character.

Game Modes

Unturned has several game modes that affect the difficulty of the passage and additional game options. Some of them are only available in the single user version.

Light Mode is ideal for a first run. The character gets 1.5 times more loot. Tools will not break. Zombies are the simplest, practically do not cause any inconvenience after the minimum buildup.

Medium is considered the most balanced. Tools can break, more dangerous zombies appear. Also, for a map to appear in the inventory, you have to create it. Bullets fly more realistic. Items are not always lootable in perfect quality.

On Hardcore, not only the gameplay is changing, but also the game interface. Loot drops out with a negative coefficient and it becomes less. All zombies receive power-ups. There is no map at all.

The special "Gold" mode is activated after purchasing a paid add-on. All players are gathered on one server and initially receive large starting resources, which does not cause problems with the balance.

Horde mode was created exclusively for battles. Not officially introduced, but open in custom modifications. There is also a trial mode "Arena": there are no zombies here, but players have to fight with each other because of the constantly narrowing barrier around them.

Interesting features

Unturned has no unique graphics or overly creative plot, but it has a lot of gameplay tricks:

  • An important part of the gameplay is devoted to the construction of shelters and the creation of alarm systems, traps. Without this, the player will suffer primarily not from zombies, but from other users who want to profit from unprotected goods.
  • The character has all those needs that accompany the player in any survival: thirst, hunger, fear. It becomes much more difficult and interesting to play with them.
  • In addition to ordinary zombies, the game has special mobs - mega-zombies. They only live in cities or other human settlements. They move faster than the player, so you can't just run away from them - you have to be cunning or engage in battle. In addition, they are able to throw boulders, inflicting critical damage at long range. The chance of such a mob spawning is low, but after killing it, you can get rare and superior quality items.
  • Noise plays an important role in the game. It's not enough to just kill a zombie - you need to do it as quietly as possible! If you allow yourself to make noise, then after the death of one monster, another 3 will come to the sound.

Unturned is a project for those who love zombie and survival games, and who don't care much about the overall visuals. It's better to start playing right away in multiplayer, because the single player mode can seem rather poor.
