I think the biggest difference between being a gamer and having (nearly) any other hobby is the rate at which the medium is improving.
I mean, things that are being done now (VR, total environmental destruction, nemesis system, etc) would have been impossible ten years ago. Sure, if you watch modern films the special effects might look better, but they can't do anything completely differently to what was capable in the 70s.
Games have completely changed within even my lifetime. Video games around now are incomparable to things like Pac-Man or Donkey Kong. But things like archery, or rowing, or playing the guitar are pretty similar now as they've always been.
So that's what it feels like to be a gamer, not even knowing what that will mean in a decades time.
